CAMP LEJEUNE WATER CONTAMINATION

For nearly 35 years, starting in 1953 and ending in 1987, U.S. military veterans, their family members, civilian workers, contractors, and other people who spent time at either Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune or Marine Corps Air Station New River may have been exposed to contaminated drinking water while stationed, living, or working at these military installations located next to Jacksonville, North Carolina. In the early 1980's, the U.S. Marine Corps discovered dangerous chemicals in the drinking water supply at Camp Lejeune.

The toxic chemicals found in the water include:

  • Benzene
  • Tetrachloroethylene
  • Trichloroethylene
  • Vinyl chloride

Benzene, Trichloroethylene, and Vinyl chloride are all classified as cancer-causing chemicals. Exposure to these chemicals has also been reported to increase the risks of cancer, birth defects and other health problems.

Camp Lejeune Justice Act

In August of 2022, the President of the United States signed the Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2021 into law. This Act was part of the Honoring Our PACT Act which addresses issues impacting veterans and their families who were subjected to toxic materials during their service to our country.

The Camp Lejeune Justice Act allows individuals to sue the United States government for the harm caused by being exposed to contaminated drinking water supplies at Camp Lejeune or Air Station New River between August 1, 1953, and December 31, 1987.
