EXACTECH LAWSUITS

Exactech is a global medical device design and manufacturing company headquartered in Gainesville, Florida. The company develops and manufactures orthopedic implant devices and related surgical instrumentation. Exactech’s product line includes a variety of hip, knee, ankle, and shoulder replacement systems designed to help people hampered by different kinds of joint pain or limited mobility due to health conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other degenerative joint conditions.

Joint Replacement Implant Product Recall

In 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recalled a variety of Exactech knee and ankle implant products due to risks of the device failing and causing many types of potential health problems as well as corrective revision surgery. The recalled knee and ankle replacements devices were packaged in such a way that the materials became vulnerable to oxidation. Oxidation can lead to deterioration, fracturing, and loosening of the artificial implant devices as well as bone tissue loss.

In addition to the FDA recall, Exactech also issued a recall of certain orthopedic hip implant devices due to similar issues as the knee and ankle implant products. In total, there were more than 200,000 recalls of the company’s hip, knee, and ankle implant devices.

Upon becoming aware of the recalls, people who have had joint surgeries where an Exactech orthopedic device was implanted and subsequently failed, began filing lawsuits against the company claiming the devices were defective and causing injuries. These victims experienced a variety of complications because of the recalled hip, knee, and ankle implant devices including chronic pain and the need for revision surgeries. The lawsuits claim Exactech failed to warn patients and medical professionals about all the potential risks and defects associated with their joint replacement products.

Symptoms of Failing Artificial Joint Implants

Common symptoms of failed or failing artificial joint implants include, but are not limited to, the following:

Pain

The most common symptom is severe and consistent pain. The pain may be localized to the specific joint where the orthopedic device was implanted, or the pain may be widespread throughout other parts of the body.

Swelling

Swelling in the area where the artificial joint device was implanted is a possible sign of infection. Increased inflammation due to the deterioration and degradation of the joint implant device can also result in swelling.

Decreased Range of Motion

A faulty artificial joint implant can restrict movement. A decreased range of motion due to a failed device can also cause severe pain when trying to utilize full range of motion.

Loosening

The Exactech orthopedic implant devices are subject to loosening, which is a type of device failure and can lead to pain and difficulty moving the joint.

Instability

A failed or failing artificial joint implant device can cause the joint to feel unstable or completely loose function, leading to accidents and injuries.

Side Effects and Injuries

The premature degradation of the Exactech orthopedic implants can cause a variety of painful health problems including, but not limited to, the following:

Synovitis

Synovitis is a medical condition characterized by inflammation of the synovial membrane, which lines the joints of the body. The swelling causes pain, especially with movement of the joint. If synovitis persists, it can result in the joint’s degeneration.

Osteolysis

Osteolysis is a process where bone tissue breaks down causing bone loss. This condition often happens near artificial joint replacements, including knees, ankles, shoulders, and hips. The body’s autoimmune response to metal or plastic particles dislodging from a deteriorating artificial joint is resorption of surrounding bone. Osteolysis triggered by joint implant devices may also cause broken bones and loosening of the implant device. This process usually begins within twelve months of the joint replacement surgery and is typically progressive, requiring that the faulty device be removed and replaced with another corrective surgery.

Revision Surgery

Many people who experience failed or failing artificial joint devices need to have revision surgeries to remove and replace the defective products. These revision surgeries are painful, costly, and require lengthy recovery and rehabilitation periods.
